September is National Preparedness Month! This month will be all about preparing for natural disasters.

Weekly themes for National Preparedness Month from Ready.gov

One of the most devastating parts of a natural disaster such as a tornado, earthquake, flood, or fire is the financial toll you will suffer. hundreds of billions of dollars worth of damage are done each year by natural disasters. Unfortunately, your home insurance may not cover it all. You will want to start saving now and make sure you have enough to cover repairs after the event.

You should make a plan to prepare for natural disasters before they happen. Decide where you will take shelter, or meet if you need to evacuate. Stock up on much needed supplies like water, non-perishable food items, battery powered radio and NOAA weather radio with extra batteries, flashlights, first aid kit with any prescription medication someone might need, a whistle to let rescuers know where you are if you get buried, and comfort items such as photographs, blankets, or kids’ toys. Sit down with your family and make sure that all adults and children know your plan. This will help you when disaster strikes and you have very little time to react.

Also be sure to learn about ways your community prepares for disasters. Different zones, evacuation routes, shelters, etc.
